CHAPTER SEVEN

Arabella’s mouth was tight, her eyes flashing with fire as she resumed her seat at the table. Robert Merlin was a manipulative, conniving—

‘Did I say something wrong?’ he asked innocently—too innocently!—as he too sat down.

She glared at him furiously, her breasts quickly rising and falling with anger. ‘You know damn well you did,’ she snapped tautly.

‘Daddy?’ Emma looked worried by the unmistakable tension emanating from Arabella. ‘What have you done?’

‘I have no idea.’ He gave a puzzled shake of his head—and all the time his eyes were gently mocking Arabella!

He knew exactly what he had done! Knew it, and found it all rather amusing. She had no doubt her father would have quite a lot to say the next time he saw her.

‘Anyone for dessert?’ Robert continued brightly. ‘Perhaps you could recommend something, Arabella?’

She didn’t know about recommend—but she would certainly like to tell him what he could do with the dessert. And his books! ‘I never eat dessert,’ she muttered in answer to both questions.

‘Sweet enough already?’

Arabella had known she had given him the opening almost as soon as she’d made her remark, but by that time it was too late to go back on it. She should have known he would take the opportunity!

Emma groaned beside her. “That was even worse than the last compliment you tried to give Arabella!’

‘Were they compliments?’ Arabella said scornfully, still angry. ‘I had no idea!’

Emma giggled as her father frowned darkly; she was obviously enjoying the exchange.

‘It’s as well your father has always shunned publicity,’ Arabella continued scathingly, warming to her subject now. ‘I wouldn’t care to do his PR on a book-signing tour!’ She met his gaze challengingly.

He gave a dismissive shrug. ‘Just as well it will never happen, then—because I would make a point of asking for you!’

‘He would too.’ Emma grimaced. ‘Just to be awkward.’

Arabella knew that—and he would probably get her!

She made a point of looking at her watch, and was genuinely surprised to see it was almost two o’clock. ‘I really should get back to the office now,’ she told them lightly. ‘Especially as my father doesn’t look as if he intends returning for some time,’ she added abruptly. Her father and Alison were still deeply engrossed in their conversation, their first course just arriving at their table.

‘Alison seems very nice,’ Robert put in softly.

Her mouth tightened. Of course Alison seemed nice; she was very beautiful. Not dark, as Robert’s wife had been, but with a blonde Nordic beauty. Robert was sure to find her attractive.

‘Very,’ she acknowledged tersely. ‘I really do have to go now. Please do stay on and have dessert and coffee,’ she added in a businesslike manner. ‘Atherton Publishing has an account here.’

‘I invited you out to lunch, Arabella,’ Robert rasped harshly. ‘Which means I pick up the bill at the end of it.’

Arabella was about to protest, but one look at the coldness of his face told her that wouldn’t be advisable. ‘As you wish.’ She shrugged before turning to smile warmly at Emma.
